A Perfect Partnership

Turkish Airlines love their relationship with the Euroleague, so back in October 2013 they signed an extension through the 2020 season.

The relationship between Euroleague and Turkish Airlines is more than just a simple sponsorship. Since the partnership began in 2010, Euroleague has really took off.  The two companies collaborated and developed social media campaigns/promotions, mass marketed documentaries and live games broadcasts shown in-flight.

In 2012, Turkish Airlines continued to be more than just a sponsor, they became a founding partner of One Team, which is a social responsibly program run by Euroleague, in which uses sports to help disadvantaged communities across the world.

Turkish Airlines also has garnered increased exposure since joining on with Euroleague in 2010.  Kobe Bryant and Lionel Messi, two of the most famous athletes in the world, star in a commercial for Turkish Airlines that has 137 million views on YouTube.

Jordi Bertomeu, President and CEO of Euroleague, said, "We are collaborating hand-in-hand to enhance the profile of the Europeans basketball globally and to bring its benefits to the communities that both Turkish Airlines and Euroleague depend on and seek to serve better."

Personally I do not think this partnership could be going any better for either side.  Turkish Airlines is become a world-wide brand as well as the Euroleague extending its reach to more people across the world.

Some Questions to consider:

1-Do you think it is a good idea for the main sponsor of Euroleague to have such an influence in the goings on of the business?

2-Is there a future to innovative collaborations like this in other sports league around the world?

  1. I agree with you that this partnership has proven very beneficial for both parties, and I think that they should continue operating in this manner, so long as neither party gains too much leverage. I think that could only happen in a few situations, one of them being NBA expansion to Europe, which would probably hurt the Euroleague quite a lot. In terms of other partnerships like this one, I don't see it happening in any American leagues, but perhaps in other young, developing leagues in other countries.

  2. I think that this partnership is beneficial for both parties, but I do think that it is risky how dependent they are on each other. If anything were to go wrong with one party, I feel like that would be detrimental to Euroleague. I think that it would be smarter to have other partners with less influence in order to ensure stability within Euroleague.

    1. I agree to this. The partnership is very smart and beneficial but decisions can also be made based on biased opinions. If by any chance Euroleague and Turkish Airways come to any disagreement, Turkish Airways' end of the partnership can harm Euroleague. I think that neither party should depend on each other as much as they do because if Euroleague decides to partner with other parties and Turkish Airways isn't satisfied than there can be actions made from biased decisions. They should be close enough for good business, but have just the right amount of distance incase someone decides to go on another direction. -Amy

  3. I'm with Adam on this one. For leagues that are already established I don't see much point unless they begin to lose money and need a sponsor. However, for new leagues trying to grow and establish recognition, it makes perfect sense. Not only does it provide them with financial resources from the sponsorship side, but they would be paired with a well established business that can lend a hand in both gaining more fans and providing business insight. -Drew Rasansky

  4. Euroleague's position as second best to the NBA makes this sort of partnership necessary for the league to expand and develop. The partnership seems to be mutually beneficial for Euroleague and Turkish Airlines and with the contract extended until 2020, I would expect to see both parties continue to benefit as Turkish Airlines will get continued exposure and Euroleague can grow through the sponsorship. This model could work for other sports leagues around the world, but probably not for any high profile leagues such as the NBA in the united states. The NBA could do more for a sponsoring company from a marketing standpoint than anything the company could provide in return- the NBA does not really need promotion via social media or other forms of exposure because it is already a high profile league. Therefore, the partnership would be unbalanced.

  5. I think this deal will be beneficial for both parties; however, I think that EuroLeague has really put all of its eggs in one basket on this deal. If something were to go wrong with the Turkish Airlines sponsorship, that could really hurt the league, as Adam pointed out. I do not ever see a deal going down like this in the NBA because there are far too many companies that would like a piece, and far too many potential gains from each interested company. However, for a smaller league such as the EuroLeague, the benefits weigh accordingly on both sides of the operation.

  6. I think that this partnership, like every partnership, has its benefits and also has the potential to go bad. I agree with what Adam said about maybe they are relying too much on only one sponsor and "putting all of its eggs in on basket." Although their partnership is stable right now, there could be potential future problems of corruption, power trips, etc…

I believe it would be beneficial to look into other opportunities to insure the stability of Euroleague. Has Euroleague looked into finding other sponsors to have on their side?
