It is actually becoming easier for these organizations to merge due to technological advances in transportation and media as well as the organizational rules.
The Atlantic Ocean will create quite a divide between the areas even though a flight from Boston to London or LA is virtually the same. Can fans get over the transportation divide to make this happen?
Recently the international game has been changing and adopting more and more to NBA rules including:
1) jump ball to decide possessions
2) courts to be wider and longer
3) three point line is going to be moved to 7.25 m (like the NBA 23' 9").
4) technical foul will give one free throw and the possession
5) “foul bonus” rule established
What is Euroleague's motive in mirroring the rules of the NBA?
Personally, I do not see this happening anytime soon because of scheduling conflicts and broadcasting times making it nearly impossible for fans to watch their team live with the dramatic time changes. It might be possible to create a Champions League / World Cup, however, could European champions ever compete against the NBA Champion?

How would the teams be divided? would it be NBA teams vs euro league team or would the nba players merge on to teams across the atlantic. I don't know that much about the Euro league but i cant see them providing that much competition. nba players are just too strong, too fast, and just overall more athletic than their euroleague counter parts. ReplyDeleteI do not think merging the two leagues is possible for a variety of reasons. First off, as mentioned, logistics would prove to be a nightmare. Yes the distance between LA and New York is the same as New York and London...but what about LA to London? An eight hour time difference, even if games were restricted to weekends, does not seem realistic. Furthermore, the current disparity between the American and European markets would create an uneven dispersion in talent, fan bases, and ultimately money. The most plausible option would be to mirror what larger European soccer clubs have begun to do and establish summer tours. NBA teams could come to Europe and play exhibition games against Europe's elite teams as a means of garnering support. Additionally, also following in the footsteps of some European soccer clubs, NBA and Euroleage teams could form mutually beneficial partnerships (higher exposure, possibly revenue sharing, or maybe even player sharing?).

I agree with Ethan- merging these two teams would not be plausible because of so many conflicting reasons. When would the games be aired on television? How would the teams qualify to play against one another? There are so many questions that would have to be brought up before this major business decision could ever be pulled off. Although it would be interesting to see these teams play in a tournament, or in some sort of play off game, the idea of these two leagues eventually merging together would not be possible anytime in the near future.
